Bailey caravans are among the most popular touring caravans in the UK, and for good reason — they are well built, hold their value, and offer excellent layouts. But like every caravan manufacturer, Bailey focuses its budget on the kitchen, washroom and upholstery. The mattress is an afterthought. After more than 40 years making replacement Bailey caravan mattresses, we have fitted thousands of Unicorns, Phoenixes, Pegasus, Rangers and Pursuits with mattresses that actually deliver a proper night's sleep.

If you have come home from a touring holiday in your Bailey feeling tired and achy, you are not alone. The factory-fitted mattress is typically 10-12cm of low-density foam — fine for the occasional weekend, but not for extended touring. What We Know About Bailey Caravan Beds

Bailey's island beds from 2018 onwards have large curved corners at the foot end that catch people out when measuring at home. The radius of these curves can be up to 60cm, which makes fitting a standard high street mattress impossible — a rectangular mattress would overhang and impede the bedroom space to the point where you could not walk around the bed properly. We have the exact templates for every Bailey model, so you get a mattress that fits precisely into those curves.

The Unicorn range has evolved considerably over the years. Earlier models (2012-2017) had more subtle corner shaping, whilst the newer Unicorn Black Edition features more pronounced curves and a slightly different bed base configuration. The Phoenix range shares similar bed shapes to the Unicorn but often has different headboard recesses depending on the layout. We track all of these variations in our database.

Bailey's French bed layouts — found in models like the Phoenix 420 and various Pursuit configurations — have their own quirks. The angled cut at the foot end varies between model years, and getting the angle wrong leaves you with either a gap or a mattress that bunches against the wall. We have made French bed mattresses for virtually every Bailey layout produced in the last 20 years.

Why Bailey Factory Mattresses Fall Short

Bailey's OEM mattresses typically use foam rated at around 28kg per cubic metre. This density feels adequate in the dealer's showroom but bottoms out quickly under regular use — particularly if you or your partner are over 12 stone. Our replacement Bailey caravan mattresses use minimum 33kg per cubic metre reflex foam as standard, going up to 39kg per cubic metre for our premium options. The difference in support and longevity is substantial.

Cutting a curved corner in foam is one thing. Making a cover that follows every millimetre of that curve — with no bunching, no puckering, no shortcuts — is something else entirely. This is where our seamstresses demonstrate craftsmanship that most caravan mattress manufacturers cannot match.

Look closely at the corners on one of our Bailey mattresses and you will see the cover shaped and sewn to follow the exact contour of the cut. Whether it is the sweeping 60cm radius curves on a Unicorn island bed or the angled cut on a Pursuit French bed, every curve is accounted for. This is not machine work — it is done by hand, by skilled seamstresses who have been perfecting this craft for years.

Most manufacturers use generic covers stretched over standard shapes. When they encounter a curved corner or an unusual angle, they compromise — either the cover bunches up at the edges, or they round off the shape to make it easier, or they simply refuse to make it at all. We do not compromise. If your Bailey has a complex corner radius, our seamstresses will sew a cover that fits that curve perfectly.

We know our competitors. They simply do not have the skilled staff to pull off this level of finish. This is what separates a proper bespoke mattress from a modified off-the-shelf product — and it is the difference between something that fits and something that fits perfectly.

Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Bailey

Weight matters if you have a Bailey with a lift-up island bed. Our Bodyshape memory foam Bailey caravan mattresses typically weigh 12-18kg, which works perfectly with the gas strut mechanism. We make all of our mattresses to ensure the load placed on the struts does not overload and damage the mechanics. If you prefer a pocket sprung mattress (25-30kg), we will check your specific Bailey model to ensure the struts can handle the additional weight.
