The Mattress Your Caravan Came With Wasn't Made for Sleeping
Caravan builders spend the budget on the kitchen, the upholstery and the trim, then fit the cheapest mattress that still looks the part — thin and rock-hard, or a thick slab of soft, cheap foam with no real support. Here’s what owners tell us.
A premium van, a bargain mattress
You spent tens of thousands on a new touring caravan — only to find the factory fitted a thin, rock-hard mattress barely 15cm deep.
Waking up stiff and sore
Your caravan is a home from home — pitched up at the coast for the fortnight. But a flat, unsupportive mattress has you waking with a bad back and a stiff neck every morning of the holiday, instead of rested and ready to enjoy it.
The wrong shape, jammed in tight
Off-the-shelf mattresses don't fit French corners, island curves or wheel-arch cut-outs — so they get folded, forced in, or leave cold gaps around the edges.
A Mattress Made for Your Caravan — Not Off the Shelf
Every mattress is hand-made to your caravan's exact bed, in the depth, firmness and shape you choose.
Made to your exact bed
Cut to your caravan's precise measurements — French, island, fixed or bunk — for a wall-to-wall fit with no gaps.
Any shape, any cut

“The comfort and support is amazing — so much so we could have bought something less deep and still had a fantastic night's sleep. The finish cannot be faulted and the fit is perfect. Thank you!”

Caravan Mattress Questions, Answered
Sizing, shapes, weight and care — the things caravan owners ask us most.
What size is a caravan mattress?
Caravan mattresses rarely match standard home sizes. Common ones include a single around 180 × 70cm, a fixed double around 130–137 × 185–190cm, and island beds that vary by make and model. Many also have rounded corners, French corner cuts or wheel-arch notches, so measuring your own bed base is always the safest starting point.
Will a standard double or queen mattress fit in a caravan?
Usually not. A standard UK double (135 × 190cm) or queen (150 × 200cm) is bigger than most caravan beds and won't pass through a 60–70cm caravan door. Caravan ‘doubles’ are typically nearer 130–137cm wide. That's why we make to measure and vacuum-roll every mattress, so it fits your bed and gets through the door and corridors easily.
What is a caravan mattress bolster?
A bolster is a foam cushion that fills the gap in an extending or island bed. On a pull-out bed it flips into the gap at night to make a full sleeping area; on an island bed a foot-end bolster lifts for access to the storage underneath. We make bolsters to match your mattress exactly, with fabric or zip links.
Are caravan mattresses lighter than home mattresses?
Yes, and deliberately so. Caravans have strict payload limits, so ours use lighter foams and slimmer profiles (usually 10–15cm) that still give proper support. A typical caravan mattress weighs around 5–15kg versus 20–40kg for a home mattress, making it far easier to lift for airing and to manoeuvre through the door.
Can I leave bedding in the caravan between trips?
You can, but guard against damp: don't leave the bed made up, store bedding in breathable bags, crack a vent or use a moisture trap, and air the caravan regularly. Over winter many owners take bedding home to avoid that musty smell. Standing the mattress on edge to breathe helps too, just not for long periods.
Is it legal to sleep in a caravan?
Yes, provided you're parked legally: on a licensed site, your own land, or private land with permission. Wild-camping rules vary: England and Wales generally need the landowner's permission, while Scotland is more relaxed under the Outdoor Access Code. Always check local bylaws. The same applies to campervans and motorhomes — see CampervanMattresses.co.uk and MotorhomeMattresses.co.uk.
How much does a bespoke caravan mattress cost?
Most caravan mattresses fall between roughly £200 and £600, depending on size, depth, foam quality and how complex the shape is (corner cuts, curves and splits add work). We'll always give you a clear, no-obligation quote before you order. Building for a campervan or motorhome? Visit CampervanMattresses.co.uk or MotorhomeMattresses.co.uk.
