See It For Yourself
A customer receives their new island bed caravan mattress — and tries it out on the spot
"Hi, Angelo. Just to say I have got the beautiful mattress on. What a beast. It fits perfectly. Look at that in the corners. That will flatten down there. Fits absolutely beautifully. Thank you so much. You're a genius, and it looks bloody amazing. This is what I was sleeping on. Look at that. Terrible. No support at all. But that looks fantastic. Thank you so, so much. Really appreciate it. And I'll leave it like you say. I'm not gonna be back down for a few days, and then we'll see what it feels like. Thank you."
— Follow-up text from Tracey, a few days later:"I've had such good sleep since it arrived. Super comfy, I love it!! Well done Chaps!! 👏 💤"
What Our Customers Say
"Swift Challenger Sport island bed — the curved foot end fits perfectly into the corner of the bedroom. Couldn't sleep on the original. This is a completely different experience."
"Bailey Unicorn island bed, both pieces ordered together. Fabric linked so the join is invisible from above. Slides back during the day perfectly. Quality is exceptional."
"Elddis Affinity 554 — curved end cut to the exact shape of the bed. Folds away neatly during the day. No gaps anywhere. Brilliant craftsmanship."
Island Bed Mattress with Bolster — Two-Piece Island Bed Mattresses
A two-piece island bed mattress consists of a main mattress section and a bolster — a separate section, typically 20–30cm wide, that sits at the head end. In caravans where the island bed slides back during the day to create more living space, the bolster folds on top of the main section to form a compact stack; when you are ready to sleep, the main section slides forward and the bolster drops back into position. We make island bed mattresses with bolsters for every caravan make and model, to your exact dimensions, with curved corners cut precisely in our Birmingham workshop. Every mattress is handmade to order with no standard sizes and no compromises.
If your island bed slides back during the day to create more living space, you need a two-piece island mattress with bolster — the bolster folds on top of the main section during the day and drops back into position at night. If the bed stays fixed in position, a one-piece island bed mattress will work perfectly.
Island Bed Bolster Mattresses — Made for Every Make and Model
We have been making island bed bolster mattresses for over 40 years and hold patterns for thousands of caravan layouts. The gallery below shows a selection of recent orders across the main caravan brands — each one made to the exact dimensions of that specific model, with curved corners that match the original bed platform precisely.
The Importance of Precise Curved Corners
The curved corners on an island bed mattress are where most manufacturers cut corners — literally. Generic caravan mattresses use approximate curves that either leave gaps at the corners or bunch up against the bedroom furniture. Neither is acceptable.
Approximately 95% of caravan island beds have one of two foot end curve styles: a large sweeping curve that approaches a semi-circle, or a tight, neat quarter-circle radius of the kind used consistently by Swift across their entire range. Both are straightforward if you have the right tools and the right pattern on file. The difficulty comes with models that fall between these two types — and with manufacturers such as Bailey, where the curve profile on the Cartagena can differ meaningfully between model years, and occasionally even between floor plan variants of the same model and year.
Large sweeping curve at the foot end — common on Lunar, Swift Sprite, Roller Team and many Elddis models.
Softer, more pointed foot end curve — used on a number of Bailey and Coachman layouts. Some Bailey models use both styles across the same model range and year.
We cut each island mattress to match the specific curve radius of your caravan. Our seamstresses then sew the cover to follow every millimetre of that curve — with no bunching, no puckering and no compromises. We use specialist industrial cutting equipment rather than hand-cutting tools, and the patterns we hold on file have been refined over four decades of making island bed mattresses. Whether your island bed has a large sweeping curve or a tight radiused corner, your mattress will fit precisely.
On many Coachman models, the bolster section requires precise notches cut into the corners to clear the cabinet extrusions at the head end of the bed. The corner radii on these notches vary between models and years. We hold templates on file for every Coachman model we have made, and the cover is hand-sewn to follow every millimetre of that notch contour. This level of finish is what separates a proper bespoke mattress from a modified off-the-shelf product — it is the difference between something that fits and something that fits perfectly.
How to Measure an Island Bed with Bolster
For a two-piece island mattress with bolster, we need the overall length, the overall width, the radius of each curved corner at the foot end, and the width of the bolster section. If the curves are different sizes — common on some layouts — we need both measurements. If you want the pieces joined, tell us your preferred joining method: loose, fabric linked or zip and link.
Every product page on our website includes a measuring diagram showing exactly where to measure. Not confident with a tape measure? We will post you a free measuring kit — a large sheet of craft paper and a marker pen. Lay the paper on your bed base and trace around the edge, or place your existing mattress on top and draw around it. Post the template back (free returns postage included) and we will cut your mattress to match it precisely.
If you know your caravan make, model and year, we may already have the dimensions on file. We have been making island bed mattresses for over 40 years and have recorded measurements for thousands of caravan layouts. Call us with your make, model and year and we will check our records before asking you to measure.
The Bolster — Three Ways to Join
The bolster is a separate section, typically 20–30cm wide, that sits at the head end of the main island bed mattress. It can be made from the same foam specification as the main mattress with matching covers, or in a different specification if you prefer a firmer or softer bolster section. When ordering, you choose how the bolster and main mattress relate to each other.
The bolster and main mattress are completely independent with no connection between them. The bolster sits in position at the head end and can be moved or removed entirely without disturbing the main mattress. The simplest option and the most flexible for day-to-day use.
A sewn seam joins the bolster to the main mattress along the split edge. Viewed from above, the sleeping surface is completely flat and uninterrupted — the join is only visible from the side. The bolster hinges along the seam when the bed is put into day mode.
A zip fastening is sewn into the edge of both the bolster and the main mattress, allowing them to be connected for sleeping and fully separated when needed. The most versatile option — and allows the bolster to be specified in a different foam grade to the main mattress.
Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Island Bed
Island beds in caravans are often large and heavy, and weight is worth considering when choosing your specification. The main mattress section stays in place on the platform — it is the foot end that lifts for storage access on split configurations, not the bolster.
Our Bodyshape memory foam island bed mattresses weigh around 12–18kg depending on size — light enough to manage easily whilst still offering excellent comfort. For those who prefer traditional spring support, our Imperial Elite 2000 pocket sprung mattresses deliver hotel-quality comfort but weigh 25–30kg.
We can make island bed caravan mattresses in depths from 5cm to 25cm. Most touring caravans have adequate headroom for a deeper mattress, and the difference in sleep quality is remarkable.
Depth tip: We can make island bed mattresses from 5cm to 25cm deep. Most touring caravans have adequate headroom for a deeper mattress, and the difference in sleep quality between a 10cm and a 15cm mattress is significant. A pocket sprung mattress at 25cm deep is genuinely comparable to a quality domestic bed.
Caravan Brands with Island Beds
Island beds are standard in most mid-range and premium touring caravans. The following brands and models are among the most common island bed bolster mattress orders we receive — though we make island bed mattresses for every caravan manufacturer without exception.
Challenger, Elegance, Sprite Freestyle, Conqueror and more. Swift uses a very consistent quarter-circle curve across most of its island bed range, making sizing reliable year to year.
Unicorn, Pegasus, Phoenix, Alicanto and more. Some Bailey models — particularly the Cartagena — vary the foot end curve between model years and floor plan variants. We identify the correct shape from your specific model and year.
Avante, Affinity, Crusader, Buccaneer and more. Elddis island beds commonly use a sweeping semi-circle curve at the foot end.
VIP, Laser, Pastiche and more. Coachman island bed bolsters often require precise notch cuts at the head end corners to clear cabinet extrusions — we hold templates for all Coachman models in our database.
Excellent, Premium, De Luxe and more. Hobby caravans are imported from Germany and dimensions are not always consistent with UK expectations — always measure before ordering.
T-Line and other models. Roller Team island beds may have foot end splits rather than head end bolsters on some layouts — call us to confirm the configuration for your specific model.
If you have a caravan with an island bed from any manufacturer, we can make a replacement mattress for it. Call us with your caravan make, model and year and we will confirm the right shape, dimensions and joining method for your layout.

Island Bed Bolster Mattress Questions
Common questions about two-piece island bed mattresses with bolsters
An island bed bolster is the separate section — typically 20–30cm wide — that sits at the head end of a two-piece island bed mattress. On caravans where the island bed slides back during the day to create more living space, the bolster folds on top of the main section to form a compact stack for daytime use. When you are ready to sleep, the main section slides forward and the bolster drops back into position. Under-bed storage access on island beds is via the foot end of the mattress — not the bolster end.
If your island bed slides back during the day to create more living space in the bedroom area, you need a two-piece mattress with bolster — the bolster folds on top of the main section during the day and drops back into position at night. If the bed stays fixed in position and does not move, a one-piece island bed mattress is the right choice. If you are unsure which applies to your caravan, call us and we will confirm from your make, model and year.
These are the three ways the bolster can relate to the main mattress section:
- Loose: The two pieces are completely independent with no connection. The bolster sits in position at the head end and can be moved or removed entirely without disturbing the main mattress. The simplest option.
- Fabric link: A permanent sewn seam joins the pieces along the split edge. Viewed from above, the sleeping surface is completely flat and uninterrupted. The bolster hinges along the seam when put into day mode.
- Zip and link: A zip fastening sewn into the edge of each piece allows them to be connected for sleeping and fully separated when needed. Also allows the bolster to be specified in a different foam grade to the main mattress.
Yes — the bolster can be any foam specification regardless of what the main mattress is made from. Some customers prefer a firmer bolster for daytime seating use and a softer main mattress for sleeping. With the zip and link joining option, the two pieces can be fully independent in specification and easily separated.
The curved corners on an island bed mattress must match the exact radius of your bed platform. A curve that is too tight leaves visible gaps between the mattress and the bedroom furniture. A curve that is too large means the mattress cannot sit flat in the bed frame. Generic island bed mattresses use approximate curves that rarely match precisely — the result is a mattress that looks wrong and often moves around in use. We cut each mattress to the specific curve radius of your caravan model, with the cover hand-sewn to follow that curve exactly — no bunching, no puckering and no gaps.
For most popular caravan models we hold dimensions on file — including the foot end curve radius, bolster width and any corner notch measurements. Call us with your caravan make, model and year and we will check our records. If we have your dimensions on file, no measuring is required. If your caravan is unusual or a very recent model we do not yet have on record, we will ask you to measure and can send a free measuring kit if needed.
For a two-piece island bed with bolster we need: the overall length of the bed from head end to foot end, the overall width at the widest point, the width of the bolster section at the head end, and the radius of the curved corners at the foot end. If the curves are different sizes at each corner, we need both measurements. The measuring diagram on each product page shows exactly where to take each measurement. If you are not confident measuring curved corners, our free paper template service is the simplest solution — we post you a large sheet of craft paper, you trace around your existing mattress or bed base, and post the template back to us.
Yes — Bailey island bed mattresses are among our most common orders. We make island bed bolster mattresses for the Unicorn, Pegasus, Phoenix and Alicanto ranges, along with older Bailey models. One point worth noting for Bailey: some models — particularly the Cartagena — have changed the foot end curve profile between model years, and occasionally between floor plan variants of the same model and year. We always confirm the correct shape from your specific model and year before cutting. See our full Bailey caravan mattress range for model-specific information.
Yes — Swift is one of the most consistent island bed manufacturers in terms of sizing, with a reliable quarter-circle curve used across most of their range year to year. We make island bed bolster mattresses for Swift Challenger, Elegance, Sprite Freestyle, Conqueror and all other Swift models with island beds. See our full Swift caravan mattress range for more information.
