Swift Caravan Mattresses Made to Measure

Swift Group is Britain's largest caravan and motorhome manufacturer, producing an enormous range of vehicles from entry-level tourers to luxury flagships. With brands including Swift, Sprite, Challenger, Elegance, Eccles, Conqueror and the former Sterling range under their umbrella, Swift dominates the UK market. But like all manufacturers, Swift allocates most of its budget to the build quality, fixtures and upholstery. The mattress is an afterthought. After more than 40 years making replacement Swift caravan mattresses, we have helped thousands of owners get the sleep quality their caravan deserves.

If you have invested in a Swift and find yourself waking up stiff and tired, you are not alone. A proper replacement Swift caravan mattress transforms your touring experience — no more coming home feeling like you need another holiday to recover.

What We Know About Swift Caravan Beds

Swift produces more bed configurations than any other UK manufacturer, and we have made mattresses for all of them. The sheer variety means getting the right shape requires specific knowledge of each model and year — something we have built up over four decades of making Swift mattresses.

Swift French beds come in several variations. The standard left hand French bed has a straightforward angled cut at the foot end. But many Swift models — particularly in the Celebration and certain Challenger layouts — have a large rounded corner or a sliced corner at the top left. Get this wrong and the mattress either will not fit or leaves an awkward gap. We track all these variations in our database.

Right hand French beds in models like the Conqueror often have the top right corner cut off at an angle. Again, the precise angle varies between models and years. We have recorded dimensions for most configurations, and where we do not, we will guide you through measuring.

Swift French Beds With Corner Variations

Some Swift French beds have additional shaping that catches people out. The Celebration 554 and certain Challenger Sport layouts feature either a large rounded corner or a sliced corner at the top of the bed where it meets the bedroom furniture. This is not a standard French bed shape — it requires specific cutting to fit properly.

Similarly, right hand French beds in the Conqueror and other models have the top right corner cut off at a specific angle. A standard French bed mattress will not fit these layouts. We have made mattresses for all these variations and know exactly what shape each model requires.

Swift Island Beds

Swift's island beds come in two main configurations: fixed island beds (one piece, no bolster) and pull out island beds (with a separate bolster that extends the sleeping area at night).

Fixed island beds like those in the Sterling Elite range — Sterling was acquired by Swift and the beds share similar construction — have curved corners that vary in radius between models. These beds do not have bolsters, so the mattress is a single shaped piece that must fit the bed frame precisely.

Swift Pull Out Island Beds with Bolsters

Pull out island beds are common across the Swift range, found in models like the Sprite Freestyle, Challenger and Elegance. These beds have a bolster cushion that folds over the mattress during the day, then extends to create the full sleeping area at night.

The mattress and bolster must work together as a system — the dimensions, fabric and firmness all need to match. We make the complete set so everything functions properly. The curved corners on these beds must also be precise, as the mattress sits within the bed frame with the bolster alongside.

Weight matters with pull out island beds if you have a lift-up mechanism for under-bed storage. We check whether your specific Swift model can handle heavier mattress options before we make it.

Swift Motorhomes

Swift also manufactures motorhomes under the Escape, Kon-Tiki, Bessacarr and other brands. We make mattresses for the full Swift motorhome range, with the same attention to detail as our caravan mattresses.

Motorhome beds often have curved corners where they meet furniture or the vehicle body. The image below shows a Swift Escape 664 French bed with a close-up of the curved bottom corner — the kind of precision shaping that makes the difference between a mattress that fits and one that fits perfectly.

Why Swift Factory Mattresses Fall Short

Swift factory mattresses typically use foam rated at around 28-30kg per cubic metre. This density feels fine initially but bottoms out quickly under regular use — particularly if you or your partner are over 12 stone. Our replacement Swift caravan mattresses use minimum 33kg per cubic metre reflex foam as standard, going up to 39kg per cubic metre for our premium options. The difference in support and longevity is substantial.

We have fitted deeper mattresses — up to 25cm deep — in Swift caravans and motorhomes without any clearance issues. Most owners are surprised by how much headroom they actually have. A deeper, denser mattress transforms your sleep quality on site.

Swift caravans come with branded mattresses that carry a certain reputation in the industry. But reputation and reality do not always match. We hear from Swift owners every week who expected more from their factory mattress based on the name alone. A recognisable label does not change what is inside.

Hand-Sewn Precision You Will Not Find Elsewhere

Cutting a curved corner or angled cut in foam is one thing. Making a cover that follows every millimetre of that shape — with no bunching, no puckering, no shortcuts — is something else entirely. This is where our seamstresses demonstrate craftsmanship that most caravan mattress manufacturers cannot match.

Look closely at the corners on any of our Swift mattresses and you will see the cover shaped and sewn to follow the exact contour of the cut. Whether it is a standard French bed angle, a rounded corner on a Celebration, a sliced corner on a Challenger, or the curves on an Elegance island bed — every shape is accounted for. This is not machine work; it is done by hand, by skilled seamstresses who have been perfecting this craft for years.

Most manufacturers use generic covers stretched over standard shapes. When they encounter a non-standard corner or an unusual angle, they compromise — either the cover bunches up at the edges, or they round off the shape to make it easier, or they simply refuse to make it at all. We do not compromise. If your Swift has a complex corner configuration, our seamstresses will sew a cover that fits perfectly.

We know our competitors. They simply do not have the skilled staff to pull off this level of finish. This is what separates a proper bespoke mattress from a modified off-the-shelf product — and it is the difference between something that fits and something that fits perfectly.

Swift Models We Make Mattresses For

We make replacement mattresses for every Swift model past and present:

Swift touring caravans: Challenger, Challenger Sport, Conqueror, Elegance, Eccles, Sprite, Sprite Freestyle, Sprite Quattro, Celebration, Fairway, Archway, Corniche, Coastline

Former Sterling range: Sterling Elite, Sterling Eccles, Sterling Continental, Sterling Europa — Swift acquired Sterling and we have measurements for all models

Swift motorhomes: Escape, Kon-Tiki, Bessacarr, Rio, Edge, Bolero, Mondial

Previous and discontinued models: We have archived measurements going back decades for older Swift models no longer in production

If you have a Swift caravan or motorhome and need a replacement mattress, we have almost certainly made one for your exact model before. Tell us the model name, layout number, and year, and we can usually confirm the dimensions from our database without you needing to measure anything.

Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Swift

Weight matters if you have a Swift with a lift-up island bed. Our Bodyshape memory foam Swift caravan mattresses typically weigh 12-18kg, which works perfectly with the gas strut mechanism. We make all of our mattresses to ensure the load placed on the struts does not overload and damage the mechanics. If you prefer a pocket sprung mattress (25-30kg), we will check your specific Swift model to ensure the struts can handle the additional weight.

For French bed layouts where there is no lift mechanism, you have complete freedom to choose based on comfort preference. Our Imperial Elite 2000 pocket sprung mattresses deliver hotel-quality support, whilst the Bodyshape memory foam offers excellent pressure relief.

For Swift owners who need to fold or section their mattress — perhaps for under-bed storage access — we offer two types of linking options: zip links and fabric links. Fabric links provide a permanent join, whilst zip links allow you to separate the sections completely when needed.

Swift Caravan Mattress Questions

Common questions about replacement mattresses for Swift caravans and motorhomes

Which Swift models do you make mattresses for?
+

We make replacement mattresses for every Swift model past and present:

  • Touring caravans: Challenger, Challenger Sport, Conqueror, Elegance, Eccles, Sprite, Sprite Freestyle, Sprite Quattro, Celebration, Fairway, Archway, Corniche, Coastline
  • Former Sterling range: Sterling Elite, Sterling Eccles, Sterling Continental, Sterling Europa
  • Motorhomes: Escape, Kon-Tiki, Bessacarr, Rio, Edge, Bolero, Mondial

We have been making Swift mattresses for over 40 years and have measurements archived for models going back decades.

Do I need to measure my Swift caravan bed?
+

For most Swift models, no — we already have the exact dimensions in our database. Simply tell us:

  • Your Swift model name (e.g., Challenger, Elegance, Sprite, Conqueror)
  • The layout number (e.g., 510, 554, 580, 645)
  • The year of manufacture
  • Whether you have a French bed or island bed

We can then confirm the dimensions and any corner variations from our records.

What is the difference between a standard French bed and one with a corner variation?
+

A standard Swift French bed has a straightforward angled cut at the foot end. However, many Swift models have additional shaping:

  • Rounded corner: A large curved corner at the top of the bed where it meets bedroom furniture (common on Celebration models)
  • Sliced corner: A diagonal cut at the top corner for furniture clearance (found on some Challenger layouts)
  • Right hand variants: Models like the Conqueror have the corner cut on the opposite side

A standard French bed mattress will not fit these layouts properly. Tell us your exact model and we will know which variation you have.

Is Sterling the same as Swift?
+

Sterling was acquired by Swift Group and production was eventually consolidated under the Swift brand. However, older Sterling caravans have their own specific bed dimensions and configurations.

We have separate databases for Sterling and Swift models to ensure we get the exact measurements right. If you have a Sterling Elite, Sterling Eccles, Sterling Continental or Sterling Europa, we have the dimensions on file.

Do you make mattresses for Swift pull out island beds with bolsters?
+

Yes — pull out island beds are common across the Swift range. These beds have a bolster cushion that folds over the mattress during the day, then extends to create the full sleeping area at night.

We make both the main mattress and the bolster as a matched set, ensuring:

  • Matching foam density: Same support level across both pieces
  • Matching cover fabric: Consistent look and feel
  • Correct dimensions: So the bolster folds and extends properly
Will a heavier mattress damage my Swift lift-up bed mechanism?
+

It can do if you choose incorrectly. Swift gas struts are calibrated for the weight of the original mattress. We make all of our mattresses to ensure the load placed on the struts does not overload and damage the mechanics.

For French bed layouts without lift mechanisms, weight is not a concern and you can choose based purely on comfort preference.

Do you make mattresses for Swift motorhomes?
+

Yes — Swift also manufactures motorhomes under the Escape, Kon-Tiki, Bessacarr, Rio, Edge, Bolero and Mondial brands. We make mattresses for the full Swift motorhome range.

Motorhome beds often have curved corners where they meet furniture or the vehicle body. We have recorded dimensions for most configurations and can usually confirm dimensions from your model name and year.

What is wrong with the factory mattress in my Swift?
+

Swift factory mattresses typically use foam rated at around 28-30kg per cubic metre. This has several problems for regular touring:

  • Low density foam: Bottoms out quickly, especially for heavier sleepers
  • Too thin: Often does not provide enough support for a proper night's sleep
  • Poor breathability: Can cause condensation issues in cooler weather
  • Limited lifespan: Compresses noticeably within a season or two

Our replacement Swift mattresses use minimum 33kg per cubic metre foam, going up to 39kg per cubic metre for premium options. We can also make mattresses up to 25cm deep.

How long does a Swift caravan mattress take to arrive?
+

Every Swift caravan mattress is made to order in our Birmingham workshop. Typical timescales:

  • Foam mattresses: 7-10 working days
  • Memory foam mattresses: 10-14 working days
  • Pocket sprung mattresses: 14-21 working days
  • Mattress plus bolster sets: Add 2-3 working days
  • Delivery: FREE to most UK mainland addresses

Your mattress arrives vacuum-packed for easy handling through your Swift door and reaches full expansion within 4-6 hours.

What guarantee do you offer on Swift caravan mattresses?
+

All our Swift caravan mattresses come with comprehensive guarantees (3-10 years depending on the mattress type) covering:

  • Manufacturing defects: Materials, construction, stitching
  • Structural integrity: Premature sagging or loss of support
  • Size accuracy: Guaranteed to fit your Swift model including any corner variations

Our Perfect Fit Promise: If we have got the dimensions wrong or the mattress does not fit your Swift properly, we will remake it completely free of charge.
