Abbey Caravans may have stopped production in 2008, but there are still thousands of them touring the UK every season — and for good reason. They were solidly built caravans that have stood the test of time far better than some newer models. What has not stood the test of time is the mattress. If your Abbey still has the original foam in it, that mattress owes you nothing. It gave up providing proper support years ago.

We have been making replacement Abbey caravan mattresses for well over 20 years. The GTS Vogue, Aventura, Expression, Spectrum, Cardinal, County, Piper — we have made mattresses for the lot. Our measurement database covers Abbey models right back to the early 1990s, so whether you have a 2008 GTS 418 or a 1996 Vogue 216, we have almost certainly got your dimensions on file already.

What We Know About Abbey Beds

Abbey caravans were part of the Swift Group from 1992 onwards, and the later models shared some bed base designs with Swift's own ranges. This is useful knowledge because it means we can cross-reference dimensions when an Abbey owner is unsure of their exact model year. The bed layouts across the Abbey range are mostly straightforward — front lounge conversions on the smaller models like the 212 and 215, and fixed beds on the larger four and five-berth layouts. The GTS and Vogue ranges from 2002 onwards introduced some more interesting configurations, but nothing that catches us out.

The one thing Abbey owners need to be aware of is depth. Most original Abbey mattresses were between 8cm and 12cm of basic reflex foam — thin even by caravan standards. When we replace these, we typically fit 15cm to 20cm mattresses, which transforms the sleeping experience without causing any issues with overhead lockers or bed base mechanisms. Abbey caravans were generally quite generous with headroom above the bed, so there is usually plenty of scope to go deeper.
