Island Bed Caravan Mattresses

Replacement island bed mattresses for touring caravans with rear island bed layouts. These feature curved or rounded foot-ends to fit around the bed frame and maximise floor space. Popular with Bailey Unicorn, Swift Elegance, Elddis Crusader, Buccaneer, and Coachman VIP owners. Made to measure for any make, model, or year.

Caravan Mattresses with Splits (Multi-Piece)

Split caravan mattresses in two, three, or more pieces. Perfect for caravans, motorhomes, and boats where the mattress needs to fold for transport, hinge for storage access, or stack away when converting from bed to seating. You choose exactly where the split goes during checkout.

Boat Mattresses

Custom boat mattresses including V-berth designs for forward cabins, hull-shaped mattresses that follow curved hull walls, and nonagon shapes for unusual cabin layouts. Made to measure for narrowboats, canal boats, sailing yachts, motor cruisers, and Dutch barges. All boat mattresses feature moisture-resistant materials suitable for marine environments.

Special Shape Mattresses

Specialist mattress shapes for unusual sleeping arrangements including circular round beds, HGV lorry cabs for professional drivers, and completely custom designs. If you have a bed that doesn't fit any standard category, we can make a mattress to match any shape you can draw.

Hobby Caravan Mattresses Made to Measure

Hobby is one of Europe's largest caravan manufacturers, building premium touring caravans in Germany to exacting standards. Hobby owners expect precision engineering โ€” and that expectation extends to their mattress. But like all manufacturers, Hobby allocates most of its budget to the build quality, fixtures and upholstery. The mattress is an afterthought. After more than 40 years making replacement Hobby caravan mattresses, we have helped thousands of UK owners get the sleep quality their caravan deserves.

If you have invested in a Hobby and find yourself waking up stiff and tired, you are not alone. A proper replacement Hobby caravan mattress transforms your touring experience โ€” German engineering deserves British craftsmanship to match.

Why Hobby Beds Demand Millimetre Precision

Most caravan mattresses sit on top of a bed base. Hobby does things differently. On many Hobby models, the mattress sits inside a rigid bed frame โ€” dropping into a recess rather than resting on a platform. This German engineering approach creates a cleaner look and more secure sleeping position, but it makes replacement mattresses significantly more challenging.

When a mattress sits inside a frame, there is no room for error. A few millimetres too large and it simply will not go in โ€” or it will bulge and look wrong. A few millimetres too small and it will shift around in the frame. The curved corners that Hobby uses on their fixed island beds make this even more demanding. Every curve must match the frame exactly.

This is why so many Hobby owners have tried other mattress suppliers and been disappointed. Standard caravan mattress manufacturers are used to making products that sit on top of a base, where being a centimetre out either way does not matter much. Hobby's inset frames demand a completely different level of precision โ€” and that is exactly what we deliver.

Hand-Sewn Precision You Will Not Find Elsewhere

Cutting a curved corner in foam is one thing. Making a cover that follows every millimetre of that curve โ€” with no bunching, no puckering, no shortcuts โ€” is something else entirely. This is where our seamstresses demonstrate craftsmanship that most caravan mattress manufacturers cannot match.

When a mattress must fit inside a rigid frame, the cover finish becomes even more critical. Any bunching at the corners and the mattress will not sit flat in the frame. Any excess fabric and it will not drop in cleanly. Our seamstresses shape and sew each cover to follow the exact contour of the foam, accounting for every curve and angle. This is not machine work โ€” it is done by hand, by skilled craftspeople who have been perfecting this for years.

Most manufacturers use generic covers stretched over standard shapes. When they encounter the precision demands of a Hobby inset bed, they compromise โ€” and Hobby owners notice immediately. We do not compromise. If your Hobby has curved corners inside a rigid frame, our seamstresses will sew a cover that fits those curves perfectly.

We know our competitors. They simply do not have the skilled staff to pull off this level of finish. This is what separates a proper bespoke mattress from a modified off-the-shelf product โ€” and it is the difference between something that fits and something that fits perfectly.

The two images below show mattresses made for two different Hobby 695 VIP owners. Same model, same precision, same impeccable finish โ€” demonstrating the consistency of quality we deliver on every order.

Why Hobby Factory Mattresses Fall Short

Hobby's German factory mattresses are adequate but not exceptional. They typically use foam rated at around 28-30kg per cubic metre โ€” standard across the industry but not ideal for regular touring use. This density bottoms out quickly under regular use, particularly if you or your partner are over 12 stone.

Our replacement Hobby caravan mattresses use minimum 33kg per cubic metre reflex foam as standard, going up to 39kg per cubic metre for our premium options. The difference in support and longevity is substantial. We can also make mattresses deeper than the original โ€” up to 25cm โ€” if your bed frame allows and you want maximum comfort.

Hobby Models We Make Mattresses For

We make replacement mattresses for every Hobby model sold in the UK, past and present:

Current and recent range: VIP, Prestige, Excellent, De Luxe, De Luxe Edition, Premium, Maxia, Ontour, Optima

Previous models: We have archived measurements going back decades for older Hobby models no longer in production

If you have a Hobby caravan and need a replacement mattress, we have almost certainly made one for your exact model before. Tell us the model name, year, and layout number (the three-digit number like 695, 560, 490), and we can usually confirm the dimensions from our database without you needing to measure anything.

Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Hobby

Most Hobby fixed island beds do not have lift-up mechanisms, so mattress weight is less of a concern than with some British caravans. This gives you freedom to choose purely based on comfort preference.

Our Bodyshape memory foam Hobby caravan mattresses are our most popular choice โ€” they offer excellent support and pressure relief whilst being easy to handle. For those who prefer a more traditional feel, our pocket sprung mattresses deliver hotel-quality support with independent coil movement.

For Hobby owners who need to section their mattress โ€” perhaps for access to under-bed storage โ€” we offer two types of linking options: zip links and fabric links. Fabric links provide a permanent join, whilst zip links allow you to separate the sections completely when needed.

Hobby Caravan Mattress Questions

Common questions about replacement mattresses for Hobby caravans

Which Hobby caravan models do you make mattresses for?
+

We make replacement mattresses for every Hobby caravan model sold in the UK:

  • Current and recent range: VIP, Prestige, Excellent, De Luxe, De Luxe Edition, Premium, Maxia, Ontour, Optima
  • Previous models: We have archived measurements for older Hobby models going back decades

We have been making Hobby caravan mattresses for over 40 years. Tell us your model name and layout number (e.g., 695, 560, 490) and we can usually confirm dimensions from our database.

Why are Hobby caravan mattresses harder to replace than other brands?
+

Many Hobby models feature inset bed frames where the mattress sits inside a rigid frame rather than on top of a platform. This German engineering approach creates several challenges:

  • Millimetre precision required: Too large and it will not fit; too small and it shifts around
  • Curved corners inside frames: Every curve must match the frame exactly
  • Cover finish critical: Any bunching and the mattress will not sit flat in the frame

Standard caravan mattress manufacturers are used to products that sit on top of a base, where being a centimetre out does not matter much. Hobby's inset frames demand a completely different level of precision.

Do I need to measure my Hobby caravan bed?
+

For most Hobby models, no โ€” we already have the exact dimensions in our database. Simply tell us:

  • Your Hobby model name (e.g., VIP, Prestige, Excellent, De Luxe)
  • The layout number (the three-digit number like 695, 560, 490)
  • The year of manufacture

We can then confirm the dimensions and corner shapes from our records. Given the precision required for Hobby inset beds, we may ask you to verify a couple of key measurements before production.

What is an inset bed frame and why does it matter?
+

An inset bed frame is where the mattress drops into a recess rather than sitting on top of a platform. Many Hobby caravans use this design โ€” it creates a cleaner look and the mattress cannot shift during travel.

However, it means the mattress must be cut to exact dimensions. With a mattress that sits on top of a base, being slightly too large just means it overhangs a bit. With an inset frame, being slightly too large means it simply will not go in.

This is why precision matters so much with Hobby mattresses โ€” and why many owners have been disappointed by other suppliers who do not understand this requirement.

What is wrong with the factory mattress in my Hobby?
+

Hobby's German factory mattresses are adequate but use standard industry foam rated at around 28-30kg per cubic metre. This has several problems for regular touring:

  • Low density foam: Bottoms out quickly, especially for heavier sleepers
  • Standard depth: Often thinner than ideal for proper support
  • Limited lifespan: Compresses noticeably within a season or two

Our replacement Hobby mattresses use minimum 33kg per cubic metre foam, going up to 39kg per cubic metre for premium options. We can also make deeper mattresses if your bed frame allows.

Can I get a deeper mattress for my Hobby?
+

Often yes โ€” it depends on your specific bed frame depth. Many Hobby inset frames have more depth available than the original mattress uses. We can advise whether a deeper mattress (up to 25cm) will fit your particular model.

A deeper mattress provides better support and comfort, particularly for heavier sleepers or those with back problems. Tell us your model and layout number and we will let you know what depth options are available.

Do you make mattresses for Hobby motorhomes?
+

Yes โ€” Hobby also manufactures motorhomes and we make mattresses for those as well. The same precision requirements apply to Hobby motorhome beds. Tell us your motorhome model and we can check our database for dimensions.

How long does a Hobby caravan mattress take to arrive?
+

Every Hobby caravan mattress is made to order in our Birmingham workshop. Typical timescales:

  • Foam mattresses: 7-10 working days
  • Memory foam mattresses: 10-14 working days
  • Pocket sprung mattresses: 14-21 working days
  • Delivery: FREE to most UK mainland addresses

Your mattress arrives vacuum-packed for easy handling through your Hobby door and reaches full expansion within 4-6 hours.

What guarantee do you offer on Hobby caravan mattresses?
+

All our Hobby caravan mattresses come with comprehensive guarantees (3-10 years depending on the mattress type) covering:

  • Manufacturing defects: Materials, construction, stitching
  • Structural integrity: Premature sagging or loss of support
  • Size accuracy: Guaranteed to fit your Hobby inset bed frame

Our Perfect Fit Promise: If we have got the dimensions wrong or the mattress does not fit your Hobby bed frame properly, we will remake it completely free of charge.
