Coachman Caravan Mattress
Coachman caravans have been built in East Yorkshire since 1990, and they occupy a well-earned position at the premium end of the UK touring market. Models like the VIP, Acadia, and Pastiche carry a reputation for quality construction and upmarket interiors β but even at this price point, the factory mattress is not built to match the rest of the caravan. After more than 40 years making replacement Coachman caravan mattresses, we know exactly where the standard specification falls short, and we know how to fix it.
Coachman owners tend to have high expectations, and rightly so. If your bed is letting down an otherwise excellent caravan, a proper replacement Coachman caravan mattress will bring the sleep quality in line with everything else you have paid for.
What We Know About Coachman Caravan Beds
Premium caravans, consistent bed configurations
Coachman's range is narrower than mass-market manufacturers like Swift or Bailey β which means their bed configurations, whilst varied, are more consistent year on year. This works in your favour when ordering a replacement mattress. We have dimensions on file for most Coachman models across many years of production, and the variation between generations tends to be smaller than with some other brands.
That said, Coachman does use some bed configurations that require specific knowledge. Their French beds appear across the Laser, VIP, and Acadia ranges with subtle differences in corner angle and head-end shaping between models. We track all of these and get the measurement right without you needing to dig out a tape measure.
A manufacturer that takes beds seriously β up to a point
Coachman specifies better-than-average factory mattresses compared to the lower end of the market. The issue is not that their mattresses start out poorly β it is that they are still built to a price that does not reflect what their customers paid for the caravan. Once you have used the caravan through a few seasons, the gap between a factory Coachman mattress and a proper bespoke replacement becomes very clear.
We hear from Coachman owners who have toured in relative comfort for a year or two before the mattress begins to compress and lose support. The higher your starting weight expectation, the sooner this becomes noticeable. Our replacements are made to perform properly for the long term, not just for the first season.
Coachman French Beds and Shaped Layouts
Left-hand and right-hand French beds across the range
The majority of Coachman French beds are left-hand configuration β the angled cut at the foot end sits to the left when you face the bed from the foot. This appears across the Laser, Acadia, and VIP ranges in various layout numbers. The exact angle of the cut and any additional corner shaping at the head end varies between models.
Right-hand French beds appear in certain Coachman layouts where the bed runs along the offside of the van. As with left-hand beds, the angle is specific to the model and we have these recorded for the models we have made most frequently. Where we have not made your exact configuration before, we will guide you through the measurement process quickly and accurately.
Head-end notches and furniture clearances
Some Coachman models have a notch or angled cut at the head end of the mattress where it sits against a wardrobe or bedroom storage unit. This is not visible in standard photographs of the bed and is easy to miss when measuring β particularly if you are replacing a mattress for the first time. A mattress made without this clearance will not sit flat and may lift on one corner.
Because we have made mattresses for most Coachman configurations before, we already know which models have this feature and account for it automatically. We will confirm this with you before we cut.
Coverless and semi-covered layouts
Certain Coachman bed frames have a fixed bolster or headboard that the mattress tucks behind at the head end, meaning the top portion of the mattress does not need to be covered with the same fabric as the sleeping surface. We make mattresses to suit these configurations β with matching or complementary fabric on any exposed areas β so the finished result looks as it should rather than showing a raw foam edge.
Coachman Island Beds
Fixed island beds in the Pastiche and VIP
Coachman's fixed island beds β found in flagship layouts like the Pastiche and higher-spec VIP models β are single-piece mattresses with curved corners. The radius of the corners varies between models and we cut ours to the precise dimension required for each, rather than using a generic curve that is close but not quite right.
The cover on these mattresses is sewn by hand to follow the curve of the foam exactly. If you have seen a replacement mattress where the cover puckers or bunches at the curved corners, you will understand why this matters. Our seamstresses have been finishing corners like this for years β it is the kind of work that makes the difference between something that looks fitted and something that actually is.
Pull-out island beds with bolsters
Several Coachman layouts use a pull-out island bed configuration, with a bolster cushion that extends the sleeping area at night. The bolster must match the main mattress in depth, firmness, and fabric β any difference creates a ridge at the join that you will feel through the night. We make the mattress and bolster as a set so this is never a problem.
Lift mechanisms and weight limits
Coachman island beds with under-bed storage typically use gas strut lift mechanisms. The weight of the mattress directly affects how well these function β a mattress that is too heavy for the struts will become difficult to lift and can damage the mechanism over time. We check the lift capacity of your specific Coachman model before recommending a mattress specification, so you are never left with a storage hatch that will not open properly.
Why Coachman Factory Mattresses Fall Short
The density gap between factory and bespoke
Even at Coachman's price point, factory mattresses are typically built with foam in the 28 to 32kg per cubic metre range. This is better than the cheapest end of the market, but it still compresses under regular use β particularly for anyone over 12 to 13 stone. Within two or three touring seasons, the mattress loses a meaningful amount of its original support.
Our replacement Coachman caravan mattresses use a minimum of 33kg per cubic metre reflex foam as standard, rising to 39kg per cubic metre in our premium options. For a Coachman owner who expects their caravan to perform to a high standard, this is simply a better specification β more support, better resilience, and a mattress that will still be performing properly five years from now.
Depth is almost never a problem
Coachman owners sometimes assume a deeper mattress is not possible because of the locker or rooflight above the bed. In our experience, most Coachman models have considerably more clearance than the factory mattress uses. We have fitted mattresses up to 25cm deep in Coachman caravans without any clearance issue. Even a modest increase in depth β say 3 to 4cm over the original β makes a substantial difference to how the mattress supports you through the night.
The cover quality difference
Factory Coachman mattress covers are produced at volume and finished by machine. Ours are cut and sewn by skilled seamstresses in our Birmingham workshop, with every corner and shaped edge finished by hand. The difference is visible in how the cover follows the shape of the foam β particularly on French beds and island beds with curved or angled corners. There is no bunching, no shortcuts, and no compromise on any non-standard shape.

Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Coachman
Our mattress options for Coachman owners
Coachman owners typically choose between two of our most popular specifications. The Imperial Elite 2000 pocket sprung mattress suits those who want a traditional spring feel β excellent support, good airflow, and a quality that properly matches the standard of the caravan they have invested in. The Bodyshape memory foam mattress suits those who want pressure relief β particularly if hip or shoulder discomfort is an issue, as the foam moulds to your body rather than pushing back against pressure points.
Both options are available in the full range of shapes, corner cuts, and depths appropriate for your specific Coachman layout. If you are unsure which is right for you, our team is happy to talk through the options β most people find they know which they prefer once we explain the differences clearly.
Zip links and fabric links
If your Coachman layout requires the mattress to be folded or split β for example, to access under-bed storage on a French bed β we offer zip links and fabric links. Zip links allow you to separate the sections completely. Fabric links create a permanent join that folds but stays in one piece. Both provide a seamless sleeping surface when the bed is in use.
