Eldiss Caravan Mattress

Elddis has been building caravans in County Durham since 1964, and across six decades they have developed one of the broadest model ranges in the UK market. From the entry-level Xplore to the premium Crusader and Affinity ranges, Elddis covers a huge spread of budgets and bed configurations. After more than 40 years making replacement Elddis caravan mattresses, we have the measurements, the knowledge, and the skilled seamstresses to give your Elddis the sleep quality it was always missing.

If you are waking up stiff after a night on site, or finding your existing mattress has simply given up, a proper replacement Elddis caravan mattress will transform your touring. Most of our customers tell us they wish they had done it years sooner.

What We Know About Elddis Caravan Beds

A range this wide means a lot of variation

Elddis produces more distinct bed configurations than most people realise. The same model name can appear with quite different bed layouts across different years β€” a Crusader from 2014 may have a different corner cut than a Crusader from 2019. We have made mattresses for every generation of Elddis and have built up a detailed database of dimensions, corner variations, and quirks across the full range.

This matters because an incorrect corner cut or a mattress that is even a centimetre too wide will not sit properly in the bed frame. Elddis bed frames are typically built with tight tolerances β€” there is little room for error. We get it right first time because we have done it hundreds of times before.

Elddis and their sub-brands

Elddis also produces caravans under the Compass badge β€” a more budget-oriented range that shares some chassis and layout configurations with its parent brand. We make mattresses for the full Compass range alongside the main Elddis lineup. If you own a Compass Casita, Rallye, or Corona, the process is exactly the same as for any Elddis model.

Elddis French Beds and Shaped Layouts

Standard left-hand and right-hand French beds

The majority of Elddis French beds are left-hand configuration β€” the angled foot end sits to the left as you look at the bed from the foot. This is the standard in most of their mid-range and premium models including the Affinity, Avante, and Crusader Sport layouts. The precise angle of the cut varies by model and year, and we hold these dimensions on file for most configurations.

Right-hand French beds appear in several Elddis layouts, particularly in older Crusader models where the bed runs down the nearside of the van. Again, the angle is specific to the model β€” a right-hand cut is not simply the mirror of a left-hand cut on all Elddis models, and the dimensions need to be confirmed before we cut.

Corner variations that catch people out

Certain Elddis models have additional shaping beyond a simple angled foot end. Some Affinity and Crusader layouts have a notched or clipped corner at the head end where the mattress meets a wardrobe or bedside cabinet. A standard French bed mattress will not fill this space correctly β€” you will either end up with a visible gap or the mattress will not sit flat.

We record these variations for every model we have produced. Where a customer has an unusual layout we have not seen before, we will guide you through how to measure the additional cuts accurately so the finished mattress fits exactly as it should.

Elddis nearside and offside terminology

When you call or message us about your Elddis French bed, we will ask which side the angled corner falls on. It helps to know that nearside refers to the kerb side of the caravan (left as you tow), and offside is the road side (right as you tow). This is the terminology we use and the terminology Elddis uses in their own documentation β€” so if you have your caravan's layout sheet to hand, we can often confirm dimensions from that alone.

Elddis Island Beds

Fixed island beds

Fixed island beds in models such as the Crusader Super Sirocco and certain Affinity layouts are a single mattress piece with no bolster extension. These beds typically have curved corners β€” the radius of which varies between models and production years. Getting this curve wrong results in a mattress that either overhangs the frame or leaves a visible gap at the corners.

We cut all curved corners to the specific radius required for each model. The cover is then sewn by hand to follow that curve precisely β€” no bunching at the corners, no shortcuts. If you have ever seen a replacement mattress where the cover puckers at a curved corner, you will appreciate why this matters.

Pull-out island beds with bolsters

Several Elddis models β€” particularly in the Encore and larger Crusader layouts β€” feature pull-out island beds where a bolster cushion extends the sleeping area at night. The bolster sits alongside the main mattress during the day and swings out to create the full-width bed when you are ready to sleep.

We make the mattress and bolster as a matched set. The dimensions, fabric, and fill all need to work together β€” a bolster that is even slightly thicker or thinner than the mattress creates an uncomfortable ridge at the join. When we make both pieces together, this is not a concern.

Weight and lift mechanisms

If your Elddis has a lift-up island bed with gas strut storage access beneath, the weight of your replacement mattress matters. Our memory foam mattresses typically weigh between 12 and 18kg β€” well within the range most lift mechanisms can handle comfortably. Pocket sprung mattresses weigh more, typically 25 to 30kg, and we check whether your specific model's struts can support the additional load before we make it. We will never put you in a position where your lift mechanism is overloaded.

Why Elddis Factory Mattresses Fall Short

The foam density problem

Elddis factory mattresses are built to a price. The foam used in standard Elddis caravan mattresses is typically rated at 28 to 30kg per cubic metre β€” adequate initially, but it degrades quickly under regular use. If you or your partner weigh over 12 stone, you will likely notice the mattress losing support within the first two or three seasons.

Our replacement Elddis caravan mattresses use a minimum of 33kg per cubic metre reflex foam as standard, rising to 39kg per cubic metre in our premium options. This is not a marginal improvement β€” the difference in support, resilience, and longevity is substantial. A higher-density foam mattress will still be performing properly five or six years from now when a factory mattress would have long since compressed beyond useful support.

Depth and headroom

Many Elddis owners assume a deeper mattress is not possible because of the overhead locker or rooflight above the bed. In practice, we have fitted mattresses up to 25cm deep in Elddis caravans without any clearance issues. Most owners are genuinely surprised by how much headroom is actually available once you measure it properly.

A deeper mattress β€” even by 3 or 4cm over the factory original β€” makes a noticeable difference to comfort. Combined with a higher-density foam or a pocket sprung construction, the result is a sleep quality on site that rivals what you get at home.

Cover quality and finish

The covers on Elddis factory mattresses are functional but not built for longevity. Seams fray, zips fail, and the fabric wears thin in the areas that take the most pressure. Our covers are made from high-quality damask and stretch fabrics sewn by our own seamstresses in our Birmingham workshop. Every corner is finished by hand. The cover on your replacement mattress will outlast the original many times over.

Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Elddis

Memory foam or pocket sprung?

For French bed layouts where there is no lift mechanism to worry about, your choice comes down to comfort preference. Our Bodyshape memory foam mattresses offer excellent pressure relief β€” particularly good if you have hip or shoulder discomfort, as the foam moulds to your body shape rather than pushing back against it. Our Imperial Elite 2000 pocket sprung mattresses deliver a more traditional spring feel with outstanding support and airflow, which suits owners who find foam too warm.

For island beds with lift mechanisms, we will guide you towards the right option once we know your specific model and strut capacity.

Zip links and fabric links

If your Elddis layout requires the mattress to be folded or split for under-bed storage access, we offer two linking options. Fabric links create a permanent join between sections β€” the mattress functions as one piece in use but can be folded. Zip links allow you to separate the sections completely when you need full access to the storage beneath. Both options maintain a seamless sleeping surface when the bed is in use.

How to order

Give us your Elddis model name, layout number, and year, and we will do the rest. We have dimensions on file for the vast majority of Elddis models β€” in most cases you will not need to measure anything. Where we do not have your exact configuration on file, we will guide you through the process step by step. All mattresses are made to order in our Birmingham workshop and delivered free to mainland UK addresses.
