What Size Is a Swift Caravan Mattress?

It sounds like a simple question. But if you've ever stood in your Swift caravan with a tape measure and a puzzled expression, you'll know it's anything but. Swift produces more bed configurations than almost any other UK caravan manufacturer — and getting the size wrong means a mattress that doesn't fit, gaps around the edges, or worse, one that won't go in at all.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know about Swift caravan mattress sizes, the different bed types you're likely to encounter, and how to make sure you get the right measurements first time.

Why Swift Mattress Sizes Are More Complicated Than You'd Think

The problem isn't just that Swift caravans come in dozens of models — it's that the same model can have completely different bed specifications depending on the year of manufacture. The Challenger 640, for example, changed its front double dimensions between 2015 and 2016. A 2015 front double measures 202cm x 156cm. From 2016 onwards, the same bed grew to 202cm x 176cm. Order without checking the year and you'll have a mattress that's 20cm too narrow.

This is why we maintain a comprehensive database of Swift mattress sizes going back decades — including exact dimensions for every model and year we've encountered in over 40 years of manufacturing.

Common Swift Bed Types and Typical Sizes

Swift caravans feature several distinct bed configurations, each with its own sizing considerations.

Island beds are one of the most popular layouts in larger Swift models such as the Challenger and Elegance. The mattress sits in the centre of the rear bedroom with walkway space on both sides. A typical island bed on a Challenger runs to around 202cm in length, but the width varies significantly between models. The foot-end usually features a large sweeping curved corner — and this is where most measuring errors happen (more on that below).

Many Swift island bed owners are also replacing a factory-fitted Duvalay mattress. If that's your situation, our guide to replacing your Swift Duvalay mattress explains what to look for in a replacement and why so many owners upgrade before they've even been on their first trip.

French beds are found across a wide range of Swift models and come in three distinct profiles. The first has a clean straight top edge with a diagonal cut at the foot-end corner. The second features a pronounced curved corner at the top — a sweeping radius that wraps around the bed frame. The third has the top corner cut off at a straight diagonal angle rather than a curve. Getting the profile wrong means the mattress won't sit correctly in the bed frame, regardless of whether the overall dimensions are right.

Fixed doubles tend to be more straightforward in terms of shape, though dimensions still vary considerably. A Challenger 640 rear double, for instance, measures 202cm x 133cm — but earlier models of the same caravan used 185cm x 133cm for the equivalent bed.

Single and bunk beds are found in family-spec Swift models. On the Challenger 640, side singles run from 163cm to 186cm in length depending on whether they're nearside or offside, with widths typically around 59cm to 72cm.

The Measuring Problem Nobody Warns You About

The most common measuring mistake Swift owners make is assuming that measuring the overall length and width is enough. For rectangular beds, that's largely true. But for island beds and French beds with curved or angled corners, it's only half the story.

The curves are the problem. On an island bed with large sweeping semicircular corners, you need to identify precisely where the straight edge ends and the curve begins — and where the curve finishes and the next straight edge starts. Get this wrong and the curve on your replacement mattress can end up significantly out of proportion with the original.

This matters because we use those straight-edge measurements to calculate the radius of the curve mathematically. If the input measurements are slightly off, the resulting curve will be wrong — and a mattress with an incorrectly proportioned curve simply won't sit properly in the bed frame.

We've produced step-by-step video guides to help with this:

That said, the honest truth is that measuring a curved caravan mattress accurately is genuinely difficult, even with a guide. It's the single biggest source of errors in customer-supplied measurements across the industry.

Why We Recommend Letting Us Look It Up Instead

We hold hundreds of Swift mattress sizes in our database, built up over more than 40 years of manufacturing. For the vast majority of Swift models, we already have the exact dimensions and curve profiles on file — including CAD data covering Swift bed configurations that allows us to cut to precise tolerances.

In practice, this means most customers don't need to measure anything at all. Tell us your Swift model and year, and we'll identify the correct size and shape. No tape measures, no trying to work out where a curve starts, no risk of a costly mistake.

How to Find Your Swift Model and Year

If you're not sure which model you have, the easiest place to look is the exterior of the caravan — Swift display the model name prominently in the artwork and graphics along the bodywork. On most caravans it will be clearly visible on the side panel.

If the graphics have been removed or are worn, contact Swift directly. Give them your VIN number — usually found on a plate inside the caravan — and they'll be able to confirm the exact model and year of manufacture.

Get the Right Size First Time

Browse our full range of Swift caravan mattresses, select your bed type, and enter your model at checkout. If your size is on file we'll confirm it before production begins. If you're unsure about anything at all, call us — we'd rather spend five minutes on the phone getting it right than have you waiting for a mattress that doesn't fit.
