Ace Caravan Mattresses Shaped to Fit Perfectly
The Ace Diplomat is one of the most popular touring caravans ever made. Thousands of them are still on the road, and we have been making replacement mattresses for Ace caravans for well over 20 years. Whether you have a 2004 Jubilee Globetrotter or a brand new Wandahome Special Edition Nightstar, we have made mattresses for the full Ace range and know the bed layouts inside out.
A Bit of Ace History That Matters for Mattresses
Ace has had a few lives. The original Ace Caravans started in Hull in the early 1960s, merged with Belmont to form ABI in 1972, and the Ace name became ABI's touring caravan brand. When the Swift Group took over, production moved to Cottingham in East Yorkshire, and Ace caravans were built on the same production line as Swift Sprites. In 2013, the Ace name was revived as a Wandahome Special Edition range — still built by Swift, still based on the Sprite platform, but with upgraded specification.
Why does this matter for mattresses? Because it means many Ace bed dimensions are shared with Swift Sprite models. If you are not sure of your exact Ace model year, we can often cross-reference the bed sizes against our Swift database and confirm the dimensions that way. It also means that if you have had a good mattress from us for a Swift and now own an Ace, you will know exactly what to expect.
What We Know About Ace Beds
The older Ace ranges — Jubilee, Award, and Supreme — followed fairly standard touring caravan bed layouts. The smaller two-berth models like the Diplomat and Ambassador had front lounge conversions, which means the cushions pull together to form a double bed. These are the mattresses people most commonly replace, because the original foam seat cushions flatten out quickly and the bed surface ends up lumpy with gaps between the sections. We make these as a single continuous mattress piece that sits on top of the pulled-out base, or as individual cushion replacements that double as seating during the day — whichever you prefer.
The larger Ace models — the Nightstar, Superstar, and the Award range — introduced fixed beds, typically a French bed or a transverse double at the rear of the caravan. These are more straightforward to replace because they are permanent beds with a dedicated mattress. The main thing to watch on these is depth. The original Ace mattresses were typically 10cm to 12cm of basic reflex foam. We usually replace them with 15cm to 20cm mattresses, which makes a noticeable difference to comfort without causing issues with overhead lockers or the bed lift mechanism.
The current Wandahome Special Edition Ace models include the Daystar with its island bed and end washroom, the Globetrotter with a fixed rear bed, and the Nightstar and Superstar with fixed French beds and side dinettes. Because these are all built on the Swift Sprite platform, the bed dimensions are identical to their Sprite equivalents — so we have these measurements on file already.
Weight and Payload on Ace Caravans
Unlike static caravans, every kilogram matters on a tourer. The older Ace Jubilee models had a payload of around 200 to 250kg, which does not leave a lot of room once you have loaded your gear. Our Bodyshape™ memory foam mattresses and CoolPlus™ cool gel mattresses are designed with this in mind — a typical replacement mattress for an Ace weighs between 8kg and 15kg depending on the size and depth, which is comparable to the original. If you want to upgrade to our Imperial Elite™ 2000 pocket sprung mattress, which weighs more at around 25 to 30kg, we will check your specific model's payload allowance and advise you on whether it is a sensible option.
