Adria Caravan Mattresses Cut to Fit

Adria is the most popular Continental caravan brand in Britain, and for good reason. They are well built, cleverly designed, and they are the only European manufacturer that fits the habitation door on the nearside for the UK market. We have been making replacement mattresses for Adria caravans for years, covering everything from the little Action to the top-of-the-range Alpina. If you own an Adria and the mattress needs replacing, we know these caravans well.

What Makes Adria Beds Different

Because Adria is a Slovenian manufacturer, the bed dimensions are all metric — which should not matter, but it does if you try to buy a standard UK mattress. A domestic UK double is 135cm x 190cm. An Adria double might be 140cm x 200cm, or 142cm x 195cm, or any number of variations that look close to standard but are just different enough that a shop-bought mattress will not fit properly. You will either have a gap around the edges or find yourself trying to squeeze something in that is 2cm too wide. We cut every mattress to your exact measurements, so this is never an issue.

The other thing that catches Adria owners out is the variety of bed shapes across the range. The Adora and Alpina models tend to have island beds with rounded corners at the foot end. The Altea range includes fixed singles, island beds, and lounge conversions depending on the layout. The compact Action models have a front lounge that converts into a large double — typically around 200cm x 200cm, which is bigger than you might expect from such a small caravan. Each of these needs a mattress cut to the specific shape and size of that model, not a generic rectangle.

Adria Ranges We Know Well

The current Adria lineup uses river names for individual models, which can be confusing if you are not used to it. The Altea range includes the Avon, Dart, and Tyne. The Adora includes the Colorado, Mississippi, and Rio Grande. The Action includes the Isonzo, Sava, Seine, and Tiber. The Alpina sits at the top of the range as their luxury all-season caravan. Older Adria models used different UK river names — the Trent, Thames, Shannon, Eden, Severn, Forth, and Aire — plus the Astella, which was the predecessor to the current Alpina.

If your Adria has an Alde central heating system — and most of the Alpina and higher-spec Adora models do — then the boiler will usually sit underneath the island bed. This eats into the under-bed storage space and can also generate a small amount of warmth directly beneath the mattress. Neither of these things is a problem, but it is worth mentioning because some owners wonder whether the heat from the Alde unit will affect a memory foam mattress. It will not. Our Bodyshape™ and CoolPlus™ foams are designed to handle the temperature range you will encounter in a caravan, and the amount of heat coming off an Alde boiler is minimal.

The Factory Mattress Problem

Adria fit a reasonable mattress compared to some manufacturers, but it is still a compromise. The foam is typically a mid-density reflex foam at around 10cm to 12cm deep — adequate for occasional weekends but not enough for regular touring or extended trips. After two or three seasons of proper use, most Adria owners notice the support deteriorating, particularly on island beds where the foam compresses unevenly because two people are sleeping on it every night.

We typically replace Adria mattresses with 15cm to 20cm options in either memory foam or our CoolPlus™ cool gel foam. If your Adria has a lift-up island bed with gas struts — and most of the Adora and Alpina models do — we need to factor in the weight of the replacement mattress. Our foam mattresses weigh between 8kg and 15kg, which is usually well within what the struts can handle. If you want to go for our Imperial Elite™ 2000 pocket sprung mattress at 25cm deep, we will check your specific model first to make sure the struts and the overhead clearance can accommodate it.

The Wider Alpina and Astella Models

The Alpina and the older Astella are wider than standard caravans — 2.5 metres versus the usual 2.3 metres. This extra width feeds directly into the bed dimensions, which means the island beds and twin beds in these models are noticeably larger than what you will find in the Altea or Adora. It also means you definitely cannot use an off-the-shelf mattress. These are bespoke dimensions that require a made-to-measure mattress every time. We have the measurements for most Alpina and Astella layouts on file already.
