Lunar Caravans built a loyal following over more than half a century of production from their Lancashire base, producing everything from compact two-berths to full-width twin-axle flagships. The brand ceased production in 2018, but there are tens of thousands of Lunar caravans still being used on sites across the UK today. If you own a Lunar — whether it is a Clubman, Quasar, Delta, Ultima, or any other model — you can still get a proper replacement mattress made to the exact dimensions of your bed.

We have been making replacement Lunar caravan mattresses for decades, and we have dimensions on file for every model they produced. A Lunar without a decent mattress is a waste of an otherwise well-built caravan. We can fix that.

What We Know About Lunar Caravan Beds

Decades of archived Lunar dimensions

Because Lunar is no longer in production, owners cannot walk into a dealer and get help — and generic replacement mattresses rarely fit the more unusual Lunar configurations correctly. This is where our four decades of records matter. We have made mattresses for Lunar caravans going back to models produced in the 1990s, and we hold the dimensions, corner shapes, and specifications for the vast majority of their production run.

Tell us your model name, layout number, and year, and in most cases we can confirm the dimensions from our database straight away. No measuring required, no guesswork.

Lunar's approach to bed design

Lunar beds were well thought out for practical caravan use, but they were not without their quirks. The Quasar and Ultima ranges in particular used some distinctive island bed configurations, and several Clubman and Delta models had French bed layouts with non-standard corner cuts that a simple measured rectangle will not replicate correctly. We have made all of these and know exactly what each model requires.

Lunar French Beds and Shaped Layouts

Left-hand and right-hand French beds

Lunar used French bed configurations extensively across their range, particularly in the Clubman, Delta, and Freelander models. Left-hand French beds — where the angled cut at the foot end falls to the left as you face the bed — were the most common, though right-hand configurations appear in several layouts where the bed runs along the offside of the van.

The angle of the cut varies between models and across different production years of the same model. We have these recorded for every Lunar configuration we have produced mattresses for — which covers the overwhelming majority of their range.

Additional corner shaping

Some Lunar French bed models have a notch or secondary cut at the head end where the mattress meets bedroom furniture. This is particularly common in the later Clubman layouts and in certain Delta configurations. A mattress made without this clearance will not sit properly in the bed frame.

Because we already know which Lunar models have these additional cuts, we account for them as standard — you do not need to spot them yourself when measuring. We will confirm the full shape of your mattress with you before we make it.

Nearside and offside — getting terminology right

When we ask which side your angled corner falls on, nearside refers to the kerb side of the caravan (left as you tow) and offside is the road side (right as you tow). Lunar used this terminology in their own documentation, so if you have a layout plan for your caravan this will make it straightforward to confirm the configuration with us.

Lunar Island Beds

Fixed island beds in the Quasar and Ultima

Lunar's fixed island beds — found in the Quasar, Ultima, and larger Alaria models — are single-piece mattresses with curved corners. The curve radius is specific to each model. A generic island bed mattress with an approximate curve will leave visible gaps at the corners or will not sit cleanly within the bed frame.

We cut the curved corners to the exact dimensions required for each Lunar model. The cover is then sewn by hand around those curves — no bunching, no puckering, no shortcuts. Owners who have tried a generic replacement before ordering from us regularly comment on the difference in fit and finish.

Pull-out island beds with bolsters

Several Lunar models used pull-out island beds where a bolster extends the sleeping area at night. The bolster must sit flush with the main mattress in both depth and firmness — any discrepancy creates an uncomfortable ridge at the join. We make the mattress and bolster as a matched set, using the same foam specification and the same fabric throughout, so the finished bed functions as it was designed to.

Lift mechanisms on older Lunar island beds

Lunar island beds with under-bed storage typically used gas strut lift mechanisms. On caravans that are now several years old, these mechanisms may already be showing some wear — and a replacement mattress that is heavier than the original can accelerate this. We check the recommended weight for the lift mechanism on your specific Lunar model and will advise on the most suitable mattress specification before you order.

Why Lunar Factory Mattresses Fall Short

Age and foam degradation

If your Lunar was built between 2010 and 2018, the factory mattress is now between seven and fifteen years old. Even a good-quality foam mattress loses meaningful support over this timeframe — and Lunar factory mattresses were not built to exceptional quality in the first place. Foam rated at 28 to 30kg per cubic metre compresses progressively under use, and by this point in the mattress's life you are likely sleeping on something that provides very little genuine support.

Our replacement Lunar caravan mattresses use a minimum of 33kg per cubic metre reflex foam as standard, rising to 39kg per cubic metre in our premium options. If you have been putting up with a flat, uncomfortable factory mattress for years because you assumed nothing better was available for your van, there is a straightforward solution.

Depth and clearance on older Lunars

Older Lunar models generally have more headroom above the bed than owners expect. We have fitted mattresses up to 25cm deep in Lunar caravans without any clearance issue. Even a modest increase in depth over the original factory mattress — 3 to 4cm is often achievable — makes a considerable difference to how well the bed supports you.

Sourcing parts for a discontinued brand

With Lunar no longer in production, sourcing replacement parts through a dealer is no longer possible. This catches some owners out — they assume that because the caravan is out of production, specialist replacements are no longer available. In practice, a bespoke replacement mattress is easier to source for a Lunar than a factory original ever was, because we make them to order from scratch rather than holding stock of pre-made sizes. Your Lunar being discontinued is not a problem for us — it is simply a model we have records for and know how to make.

Lunar Models We Make Mattresses For

Full Lunar model list

We make replacement mattresses for every Lunar model produced during their full production run:

  • Lunar touring caravans: Clubman, Quasar, Delta, Ultima, Stella, Alaria, Lexon, Cosmos, Venus, Freelander, Explorer, Chateau
  • Older and early production models: We hold archived dimensions for Lunar models produced throughout the 1990s and 2000s — if you have an older Lunar, give us the model and year and we will check our records

Because Lunar is no longer in production, there is no new model documentation being issued. Everything we know about Lunar beds has been built up through decades of actually making mattresses for them — which is exactly the kind of knowledge that matters when you need an accurate fit.

Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Lunar

Memory foam or pocket sprung?

For French bed layouts with no lift mechanism to consider, the choice comes down to comfort preference. Our Bodyshape memory foam mattresses offer excellent pressure relief — the foam moulds to your body shape rather than pushing back, which is particularly good if hip or shoulder discomfort interrupts your sleep. Our Imperial Elite 2000 pocket sprung mattresses deliver a traditional spring feel with hotel-quality support and better airflow — suited to those who find foam too warm.

For island beds with lift mechanisms, we factor in the weight of the mattress against the capacity of your specific Lunar model's struts before making a recommendation.

Zip links and fabric links

If your Lunar layout requires the mattress to fold or split for storage access, we offer two linking options. Fabric links create a permanent join that folds but keeps the mattress in one piece. Zip links allow complete separation of the sections when you need full access to the storage beneath. Both options deliver a seamless sleeping surface when the bed is made up.

How to order

Give us your Lunar model name, layout number, and year of manufacture, and we will check our records. In most cases we have the dimensions and configuration on file and you will not need to do any measuring at all. All mattresses are made to order in our Birmingham workshop and delivered free to mainland UK addresses.
