See It For Yourself
A customer receives their bespoke caravan mattress — and tries it out on the spot
"Hi, Angelo. Just to say I have got the beautiful mattress on. What a beast. It fits perfectly. Look at that in the corners. That will flatten down there. Fits absolutely beautifully. Thank you so much. You're a genius, and it looks bloody amazing. This is what I was sleeping on. Look at that. Terrible. No support at all. But that looks fantastic. Thank you so, so much. Really appreciate it. And I'll leave it like you say. I'm not gonna be back down for a few days, and then we'll see what it feels like. Thank you."
— Follow-up text from Tracey, a few days later:"I've had such good sleep since it arrived. Super comfy, I love it!! Well done Chaps!! 👏 💤"

Bespoke Caravan Mattresses — Handmade to Your Exact Size and Shape
A bespoke caravan mattress is one made entirely to your specification — your dimensions, your shape, your foam grade, your depth. Not adapted from something close. Not trimmed from a standard size. Cut, shaped, and finished from scratch to solve the specific problem your bed presents.
For most caravan owners, the word bespoke signals that their requirement is unusual — a shape that is not straightforward, a combination of cuts that needs experience to get right, or a configuration that other suppliers have already told them they cannot help with. That is exactly the kind of order we handle every day in our Stechford workshop. We have been making bespoke caravan mattresses in Birmingham for over 40 years. Very few shapes or configurations are genuinely new to us.
If another supplier has told you they cannot make it — call us before you give up. In 40 years we have rarely encountered a caravan mattress configuration we could not produce. Unusual shapes, complex cuts, specific foam combinations. Tell us what you need and we will tell you whether we can make it.
What Makes a Caravan Mattress Truly Bespoke
The word bespoke is overused in retail. In our workshop it has a specific meaning: a mattress where the requirement goes beyond cutting a rectangle to a non-standard size. A bespoke caravan mattress involves one or more of the following:
- A complex or unusual shape. Radius corners, diagonal cuts, multiple notches, L-shapes, tapered edges — or a combination of several of these on a single mattress. The more cuts involved, the more experience is required to get the finished shape right.
- A specific foam combination. Dual-layer constructions, specific density requirements, a depth or grade that is not in our standard range, or a mattress built to solve a particular problem — excessive heat, a very heavy user, a medical requirement for firmness.
- A matched set. Island bed mattresses where the two halves and the bolster must align precisely — same depth, same foam grade, same cover fabric, cut so the join between the halves is invisible when the bed is made up.
- A configuration where getting it wrong has a significant consequence. A Coachman island bed where the cabinet notches are structural and the mattress must clear them exactly. A Bailey where the model-year variation means the standard pattern may not apply. An older caravan where the original mattress is long gone and there is no reference to work from.
If your requirement is simply a non-standard length and width with a straightforward rectangular shape, that is a custom size mattress. If the shape is what makes it complicated, that is where bespoke starts.
Bespoke Island Bed Mattresses — The Most Complex Job We Do
Island bed mattresses are the most technically demanding bespoke caravan mattress we make, and they are also our most common bespoke order. There are several reasons why they require more care than a straightforward fixed bed:
The shape is not just a rectangle. Almost every island bed has a shaped foot end — a radius curve, a diagonal cut, or a combination of the two. The mattress halves need to be cut to match that shape exactly. A mattress that does not follow the platform curve will rock, shift, and leave visible gaps at the foot end.
The two halves must match. A split island bed mattress is cut as two halves that sit side by side. The cut edge where the two halves meet must be perfectly straight and square, and both halves must be cut to the same depth, so the join is invisible and the sleeping surface is level across the full width of the bed.
The bolster is a separate, specific piece. The island bed bolster sits at the head end — not the foot end. It fills the gap between the two mattress halves when the bed is in day use, bridging the gap to create a full-width seating or lounging surface. It is not a decorative cushion. It needs to be cut to a precise width and depth to sit flush with the mattress halves on either side. Too narrow and there is a gap. Too wide and it creates a ridge. Too thick or too thin and the surface is uneven.
Cabinet extrusions on Coachman island beds require precise notching. Many Coachman island bed configurations have furniture extrusions — structural cabinet corners or legs — that project into the bed platform at the foot end. The mattress must have notches cut to clear these extrusions exactly. The position and size of the notches varies by model. Get them wrong and the mattress will not sit flat. We hold Coachman patterns going back decades and know where these notches fall on most models.
Swift island beds are reliable — but only if you know the radius. Swift caravans have used a consistent quarter-circle radius curve on their island beds across most models and years. This makes them one of the more predictable bespoke island bed orders we handle — for most Swift models, we can cut straight from our records without the customer needing to measure. But the key word is consistent, not identical. If a Swift island bed platform has been repaired or replaced, the curve may not match our records. We always confirm before cutting.
Bailey island beds need the year, not just the model. Bailey changed the foot-end curve on certain models — including the Cartagena — between production years. A bespoke island bed mattress cut to the 2017 Cartagena pattern may not fit a 2019 Cartagena. This is why we always ask for the year, not just the model name, and why on models where we know variation exists, we ask the customer to confirm dimensions before we cut.
Bespoke Caravan Mattress Shapes and Configurations
These are the bespoke configurations we produce regularly. Most involve a combination of cuts rather than a single straightforward shape:
The complete bespoke island bed set — two matched halves with radius foot-end curves, plus a bolster cut to width and depth. The most common bespoke order we receive.
Coachman and some Elddis island beds require precise corner notches to clear cabinet extrusions. Position and size vary by model. We hold patterns for most.
Nearside or offside diagonal cut to create the walkway to the rear of the caravan. The angle varies by model and must be cut precisely — too shallow or too steep and the mattress blocks the walkway.
Some island beds require both a radius curve at the foot end and one or more cabinet notches on the same mattress. This is the most complex single-piece cut we produce.
Wider at the head end, tapering toward the foot — following the inward angle of a boat hull or campervan body. Sides cut at a bevel so the mattress sits flush against the hull.
Shaped to fit the cab profile — often wider at one end and angled on one or both sides. Frequently requires a combination of straight cuts and curves on a single piece.
Two rectangles joined as a single piece where the bed wraps around a corner. Common in larger motorhomes and some campervan conversions. Cut and covered as one unit.
Any of the above shapes in a two-layer construction — Reflex foam base bonded to a Bodyshape memory foam comfort layer. Both layers cut to the same bespoke shape before bonding and covering.
Bespoke Memory Foam and Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Every foam grade we offer is available in a bespoke configuration. The shape of the mattress does not affect the performance of the foam — a Bodyshape memory foam island bed half with a radius corner performs identically to a plain rectangle cut from the same foam. The viscoelastic properties are in the material, not dependent on the outline of the finished piece.
For bespoke island bed mattresses in particular, memory foam is worth considering seriously. A caravan island bed is where most owners spend the majority of their sleeping time — it is a permanent, fixed sleeping surface used every night when the caravan is in use. The quality of sleep on an island bed matters more than on a bunk or a converted dinette. A bespoke 15 cm or 20 cm Bodyshape memory foam island bed mattress — cut to the exact radius, notched precisely for any cabinet extrusions, with a matched bolster — is a fundamentally different experience to the original.
Specific points on bespoke foam and sprung options:
- Reflex foam holds bespoke cuts well. Dense, open-cell Reflex foam does not compress or distort at cut edges over time. A cabinet notch cut into 33 kg Reflex foam will still be the same shape five years later. This matters for Coachman island beds where the notch dimensions are critical to the mattress sitting flat.
- Memory foam holds radius curves cleanly. The cut edge of a Bodyshape memory foam radius corner stays crisp and does not deform under regular use. Cheap memory foam at lower densities will compress at the cut edge and the curve will gradually lose its shape.
- Pocket sprung bespoke mattresses are possible for larger formats. Our Imperial Elite 2000 pocket sprung option is available for bespoke island bed configurations where the bed dimensions are large enough to accommodate a sprung construction. Minimum depth requirements are greater than for foam. Call us with your dimensions to confirm whether pocket sprung is achievable for your specific island bed.
- Dual-layer bespoke is our most popular upgrade. A Reflex foam base provides structural support and weight distribution. The Bodyshape memory foam comfort layer on top provides pressure relief. Both layers are cut to the same bespoke shape and bonded before the cover is sewn. The result is a bespoke mattress that performs better than a single-layer option in either material alone.
Cover fabric follows the shape exactly. Every bespoke mattress cover is cut and sewn to follow the outline of the foam — including every curve, notch, and angle. There are no square covers sewn onto shaped foam and tucked in at the corners. The cover is made for the specific shape of your mattress, which means it fits without bunching, pulling, or excess fabric at the cut edges.
How We Handle a Bespoke Order from Start to Finish
A bespoke caravan mattress order follows a clear process. Every step is designed to make sure we cut the right thing first time.
Step 1: Tell us what you have. Make, model, year of caravan — or a description of the bed configuration if it is not a standard caravan. We will check our pattern database. For most popular Bailey, Swift, Coachman, Elddis, Lunar, Hobby, and Buccaneer models, we will already have a bespoke pattern on file and can proceed without you needing to measure.
Step 2: If we do not have your pattern — send us a template. For any bespoke shape, we strongly recommend our free paper template rather than tape measure dimensions. We post you a roll of large craft paper and a marker pen at no charge. You lay the paper over the bed base, trace around the entire outline — including every radius curve, cabinet notch, and diagonal angle — fold it and return it in the same packaging using the pre-paid returns label. We cut directly from your trace. This removes every measurement error that comes from trying to calculate complex geometry with a tape measure.
Step 3: We confirm the cut before we start. Whether we are working from our pattern database or from your template, we confirm the dimensions back to you before production begins. For complex bespoke orders — particularly island beds with multiple cuts — we will often talk through the configuration by phone to make sure we have understood everything correctly before cutting a single piece.
Step 4: We cut, sew, and check. The foam is cut to shape first. The cover is then cut and sewn to match the exact outline of the foam — every curve, every notch, every angle. Before dispatch, the finished mattress is checked against the cut pattern. For island bed sets, the two halves and the bolster are checked together to confirm alignment and consistency before they leave the workshop.
Bespoke vs Made to Measure vs Custom Size — Which Do You Need?
All three produce a mattress made to your exact requirements. The distinction is in complexity:
| Term | Best describes | What we make |
|---|---|---|
| Custom size | A non-standard length or width — the shape is a plain rectangle | Any dimensions, any foam grade |
| Made to measure | Exact dimensions matter — may have a shaped edge or curved corner | Any dimensions, any foam grade |
| Bespoke | Complex shape, multiple cuts, matched set, or specific foam construction | Any dimensions, any foam grade, any shape, any construction |
If you are not sure which applies to you, do not worry about it — describe what you need and we will make the right mattress regardless of what you call it. See also our made to measure caravan mattresses and custom size caravan mattresses pages.

Bespoke Caravan Mattress FAQs
Common questions about ordering a bespoke caravan mattress made to your exact shape and specification
A bespoke caravan mattress is one made entirely to your specification — your dimensions, your shape, your foam grade, your depth. It goes beyond a simple non-standard size to involve complex shapes, specific foam combinations, or matched sets such as island bed halves with a bolster. Every bespoke mattress is cut, shaped, and covered by hand in our Birmingham workshop.
Yes — bespoke island bed mattresses are our most common bespoke order. We cut the two mattress halves and the bolster as a matched set. The bolster fits at the head end, bridging the gap between the halves in day use. Storage access is at the foot end via the lifting base. We hold bespoke patterns for island bed configurations from Bailey, Swift, Coachman, Elddis, Lunar, Hobby, and Buccaneer caravans, including knowledge of model-year variations that affect Bailey and some Elddis models.
Yes. Coachman island beds frequently have cabinet extrusions that project into the corners of the bed platform. The mattress needs precise notches cut to clear them. We hold Coachman patterns going back decades and know the notch positions and dimensions for most models. Tell us your Coachman model and year and we will check whether we have your pattern before asking you to measure.
For complex bespoke shapes, we always recommend our free paper template kit rather than tape measure dimensions. We post you a roll of large craft paper and a marker pen. You lay the paper over the bed base and trace the entire outline — including every radius curve, cabinet notch, and diagonal angle. Post it back to us using the pre-paid returns label. We cut directly from your trace, which removes all the measurement errors that come from trying to calculate complex geometry with a tape measure.
For island bed sets, we will often also call to talk through the configuration before cutting, to make sure we have understood the full requirement correctly.
Bespoke mattresses are priced on the foam used and the complexity of the cut — not on a fixed premium for being non-standard. A plain rectangular bespoke size costs the same per square metre as any other mattress in the same foam grade. More complex cuts — multiple notches, radius curves, matched island bed sets — involve more labour and are priced accordingly. We will always give you a clear price before any work begins.
Yes. Our Bodyshape memory foam is available in any bespoke configuration including island bed halves with radius corners, cabinet notches, or diagonal cuts. The foam holds cut edges cleanly at the densities we use, so radius curves and notches stay crisp over time. Available from 5 cm to 25 cm deep. Dual-layer constructions — Reflex base with Bodyshape comfort layer — are also available in bespoke configurations.
Yes. The bespoke service covers any vehicle or vessel. Motorhomes often share the same island bed configurations as caravans. Campervans frequently need tapered V-berth mattresses or shaped over-cab beds. Boats need mattresses that follow the hull profile — often tapered, sometimes with bevelled edges to sit flush against angled hull walls. We handle all of these regularly.
Most bespoke orders are completed and dispatched within a few working days of dimensions being confirmed. Complex island bed sets involving multiple cuts and a matched bolster may take a little longer. If you are using the paper template service, allow time for postage in both directions. We will give you a realistic lead time at the point of ordering and will not start cutting until dimensions are confirmed.
Every bespoke mattress — including complex island bed sets with radius corners and cabinet notches — is roll-packed and vacuum compressed for delivery. This makes even large or unusually shaped mattresses manageable to carry through a caravan door. The mattress expands to full depth within a few hours of unrolling. Delivery is free to mainland UK on all orders.
Call us before you give up. In 40 years of making bespoke caravan mattresses, we have rarely encountered a configuration we could not produce. Other suppliers often decline complex shapes because they lack either the pattern knowledge or the cutting experience. We cut radius corners, cabinet notches, diagonal cuts, matched island bed sets, and unusual combinations of all of these every week. Describe what you need and we will tell you honestly whether we can make it.
