A custom size mattress is exactly what it sounds like — a mattress cut to a length and width that no standard product covers. Not the nearest size from a catalogue. Not a standard single trimmed down. A mattress made from scratch to the dimensions your bed actually needs.

For caravan owners, this is rarely optional. Caravan bed dimensions are set by the manufacturer to fit the available floorplan, not to match any mattress standard. The result is that almost every caravan bed is a custom size — and the only way to get a mattress that fits properly is to have one made to match it.

Why Caravan Beds Are Never a Standard Size

Standard UK mattress sizes — single (90 x 190 cm), small double (120 x 190 cm), double (135 x 190 cm), king (150 x 200 cm) — were established around domestic bed frames. Caravan manufacturers have never been bound by them. A caravan bed is sized to fit the space available inside the van after everything else — the kitchen, the seating, the bathroom, the storage lockers — has been laid out on the floorplan. Whatever space is left is where the bed goes, and that space is almost never 90, 120, 135, or 150 cm wide.

The width issue alone affects the vast majority of caravan owners. But it is not the only dimension problem:

• Length varies too. Many caravan fixed beds are shorter than 190 cm — particularly in smaller vans where a full-length bed would compromise the overall layout. A mattress that is 10 cm too long will buckle at the foot end. A mattress that is 10 cm too short leaves a gap that catches cold air and feels wrong underfoot.
• Older caravans are particularly non-standard. Pre-2000 caravans were built to even more varied dimensions than modern ones. If you have an older van and have tried to source a replacement mattress, you will already know that nothing in a standard catalogue comes close. The only solution is custom.
• Replacement mattresses are often the wrong size. Many caravans arrive second-hand with a mattress that was already a replacement — and often that replacement was not the right size either. Someone made do with something close. If you are measuring an existing mattress to reorder, always measure the bed base rather than the current mattress. The base is the ground truth.
• European caravans use metric dimensions. Continental caravans — particularly German models like Hobby — often use dimensions that do not map to UK standards at all. A Hobby caravan may have a bed that is 200 cm long rather than 190 cm, or 140 cm wide rather than 135 cm. Custom size is the only route.

Custom Size Memory Foam Mattresses

Our Bodyshape memory foam is available in any custom size. There is no size premium — a 117 x 183 cm custom size memory foam mattress costs the same per square metre as any other dimension. You pay for the foam you receive, not for the inconvenience of a non-standard cut.

For custom size fixed bed mattresses in particular, memory foam is worth considering seriously. A fixed bed is where most caravan owners spend the majority of their sleeping time — it is not folded away or converted from a dinette each evening. The quality of sleep on a fixed bed matters more than on an occasional-use bunk or a converted lounge. Bodyshape memory foam at 15 cm or 20 cm deep is a meaningful upgrade over the 10–12 cm foam original that most fixed beds come with.

A few custom size memory foam specifics worth knowing:

• Wider custom sizes benefit most from memory foam. On a 117 cm or 122 cm wide fixed double shared by two people, the no-motion-transfer property of memory foam means that when one person turns over in the night, the other is not disturbed. On a narrow bunk, this matters less — but on a shared fixed double it is one of the most noticeable improvements memory foam delivers.
• Custom size does not affect the foam's performance. A Bodyshape memory foam mattress cut to 117 x 183 cm performs identically to one cut to 135 x 190 cm. The viscoelastic properties are in the foam itself, not dependent on the dimensions of the finished mattress.
• Zip-off washable covers are available. Particularly useful for fixed bed mattresses in caravans that are used regularly — the cover can be removed and washed without moving the mattress.

Custom Size Foam Mattresses

Our Reflex foam custom size mattresses are the practical, cost-effective choice for caravan owners who need a properly made mattress at a sensible price. We use minimum 33 kg per cubic metre Reflex foam as standard — significantly denser than the 28 kg foam used in most original caravan mattresses, and the difference in support and longevity is noticeable from the first night.

Custom size Reflex foam mattresses are available from 5 cm to 25 cm deep. For bunk beds and over-cab sleeping areas where headroom is limited, a 5 cm or 7 cm deep custom cut gives you a properly supportive surface in a minimal depth. For fixed doubles where you want a serious night's sleep, a 15 cm or 20 cm deep Reflex mattress at the right custom width is a significant step up from whatever came with the caravan.

We also offer Imperial Elite 2000 pocket sprung custom size mattresses for those who prefer a sprung feel. Pocket sprung requires a greater minimum depth, so it is best suited to fixed beds with sufficient base-to-locker clearance. How to Order a Custom Size Mattress

Ordering a custom size mattress is straightforward. The key is giving us accurate dimensions — everything else we handle.

Step 1: Check our pattern database. For most popular caravan models, we already have the exact dimensions on file. Tell us your make, model, and year and we will check. For Swift, Bailey, Coachman, Elddis, Lunar, Hobby, and Buccaneer caravans, there is a good chance we already have your dimensions and can cut without you needing to measure anything.

Step 2: If we do not have your dimensions — measure the bed base. Not the existing mattress. The base. Measure the length and width at the widest points. For a plain rectangular custom size, that is all we need — length, width, and the depth you want. If you are unsure about depth, tell us what headroom you have available and we will advise.

Step 3: If your mattress has any shape to it — use our free measuring kit. For a plain rectangle this is not necessary. But if your bed has curved corners, diagonal cuts, or any notches, we recommend tracing the base rather than measuring it. We post you a roll of large craft paper and a marker pen, free of charge. You trace the base, fold the paper, and return it in the same packaging with a pre-paid returns label. We cut directly from your trace. Nothing to pay at any point.

Step 4: We confirm before we cut. Whatever method you use, we confirm the dimensions back to you before production starts. If anything looks inconsistent — a dimension that does not match what we would expect for your caravan model, or a size that seems unusually large or small — we will contact you before proceeding.
